TOP 10 DISC GOLF STARTER SETS
Just stick with a top disc golf brand and you’re all “set”! Here are the Top 10 beginner disc golf sets I recommend for brand new/beginner disc golfers aiming to get into the sport:
1. Dynamic Discs Misprint Starter Pack – for only $19.99 + shipping – At the time of writing this, you get a quality starter set that will be durable enough to give you months or even years of use. I think DD’s base plastic used for these discs are the best base plastic on the market because it is nice and soft but somehow is very durable considering it is a “base” plastic. This is definitely my #1 pick for beginners because of the price combined with the quality and fact that the discs are all great for newbie disc golfers. Buy this one, go play, and I promise you’ll be happy with the discs for a long time.
Pros: Price (second cheapest on this list), most durable base plastic, and beginner-friendly discs. This set has the overall most value and therefore is #1 choice.
Cons: Exact molds (disc names) unknown, not always in stock, and misprint designs (could be a pro because a lot of people like the look of misprinted stamps).
Tip: If this option is currently out-of-stock on Dynamic Disc’s website (it often goes in and out of stock), then you can instead get their regular beginner set that is not misprinted for only $10 more. I also recommend this set as it is almost exactly the same as the misprint set (minus the misprinted stamps). It includes 3 great beginner discs: the Judge (my favorite beaded putter for both putting and throwing, the Truth which is great for beginners both backhand and forehand, and the Escape which is a top beginner fairway driver.
2. Kastaplast Starter Set – $43.00 + shipping – If price isn’t an issue this is the highest-quality starter set which you can find and what I personally would buy. It will run you around $50, but you get what you pay for. Kastaplast is my favorite manufacturer, and I bag 2 of the 3 discs in this set today as an intermediate player. The Reko putter has a bead but is great for putting and throwing. It feels nice in your hand (not too shallow or too deep), and it flies great. It flies straight and far and is very workable (meaning it will hold whatever angle you put it on and fly in that direction). Secondly, your midrange (the Svea) is slightly understable meaning as a new player you will be able to get longer flights and more distance as it will turn a little bit in one direction before fading in the other. Third, the Falk (fairway driver) is also understable and goes VERY FAR! Currently, the Falk is my favorite disc because it flies so far yet somehow pretty straight at the same time. Pick up this set and you’ll be a Kastaplast fan like me for a very long time! P.S. Kastaplast’s plastic is the best on the market at this time in terms of durability and how it feels in your hand. All of their plastic types are amazing so do yourself a favor and try Kastaplast!
Pros: Highest-quality, most durable set on this list (will last years), best feeling plastic (not too slick but not too grippy either), great beginner-friendly molds.
Cons: Most expensive option for 3-disc set on this list.
3. Innova Starter Set – $29.99 + shipping – This is the most popular option and the one I started with. Innova is the oldest manufacturer and revolutionized disc golf discs when the sport was new so this starter set has been around the longest. Plus, it is the most common disc golf beginner set that you will see in big box stores. The 3 discs in this set are all very beginner-friendly discs. An advantage of this option is that the plastic is not very durable which means you get to experience how the flight of the discs changes as you “beat them in”. You will learn that almost all discs become more understable as you use them due to wear and changes in their aerodynamics. This will help you experience what all disc golfers ultimately experience which is breaking in discs to flights that are perfect for your liking. Beware however that this set will not last as long as the first two because Innova’s DX plastic is very soft and when your discs “beat in” too much they become too understandable and then are too touchy and hard to manipulate on the perfect angle to fly the way you want. This is a great set that will probably last you your first 3-6 months if you play frequently but after that you may need some discs in a more durable plastic.
Pros: Soft plastic feels nice in your hand and is light which helps you throw better/farther as a beginner and with putting. Soft plastic allows for the flight of your discs to change faster allowing you to learn how disc flights change as they wear and become more understable (this could be a con however as it limits the life of the discs). This set includes great beginner molds (discs) that are classics and known by most disc golfers helping you related more with old-school disc golfers who almost all know Innova and that fly very nicely for beginners. Also, a big pro is that this set (and Innova) are the most common discs you will find in big box stores so if you become an Innova fan you will have an easier time getting access to more Innova discs in the future. That can be a nice benefit especially if you don’t have any disc golf stores in your area.
Cons: Least durable plastic option on this list so they will not last as long until they become too under stable and unusable. They still likely will last a few months (or more if you don’t play very often or don’t have a lot of trees on the courses you play). If you have been bitten by the disc golf bug and know you’re hooked on the game I would recommend a different option than this or pick #5 (Discmania starter set) which are by far the least durable plastics for beginner sets on this list.
4. MVP R2 Recycled Plastic Starter Set – $29.99 + shipping – This could be the best starter set on the market, but it is not higher on my list because personally I have not felt or thrown the R2 plastic yet. MVP only produces great discs and their overmold gyro technology is effective especially for the slower speed discs in this set. The Uplink is the disc I got my first ace with and truly a great disc especially for beginners. It is understable but not too understable. This is a great starter set for a great price and the rim glows! Also, OTB is one of my favorite online disc retailers so support them and grab this set!
Pros: Gyro technology helps with better and longer flights as well as forehand throws. These discs come in a durable, long-lasting, and recycled plastic and the outer rim glows so you can play night rounds with it. Great beginner friendly molds (discs) -the uplink is a top disc I would recommend for a beginner because it is an understable mid-range that will help you get full flights at lower speeds more easily.
Cons: Black is a color that is harder to find if thrown in the “rough”. Brighter colors are easier to find if you throw them where you don’t intend (which usually happens a lot if you’re a beginner). That is the only con I can think of for this set as it is a great option for a good price.
5. Discmania Starter Set – $15.00 + $3.95 shipping in the US – This isn’t the most durable or best starter set; however, it is #5 on the list because this is a great option for kids, women, or people with smaller hands and slower arms and mostly because it is the cheapest option on this list. These discs are very light and slightly smaller in diameter than other discs in the list making them fly very well for beginners. If you’re looking to get a set for one of the people described above, pick this set. The downside is that they are not very durable and may not last a very long time. Especially if you hit trees very hard. The biggest pro is the Sensei putter which is one of my favorite putters that flies great and feels great due to its low and beadless profile.
Pros: Cheapest set on this list, lightweight, thin profile, and small diameter make it a great choice for people with smaller hands and slower arms, and the Sensei putter is a great disc for putting and throwing. One other pro here is that it is sold by my personal favorite online retailer 1010discs.com which is a joy to buy from and has low shipping.
Cons: Least durable plastic on the list that will easily bend and deform if you hit trees hard making your discs more understable.
6. Dynamic Discs 5-Disc Prime Burst Starter Set – $45.99 + shipping – This is almost exactly the same as my #1 pick just with two extra discs (and it’s more expensive). All five discs in this set are great molds for beginners, and the variety of two additional discs will surely bring more enjoyment on the course. The prime base plastic, again, is my favorite base plastic on the market and very durable giving you many months or maybe years of enjoyment. If cost isn’t an issue I’d go with this instead of the #1 misprint starter pack because of the extended selection of discs.
Pros: In addition to what the other sets on this list include (a putter, mid-range, and understable fairway driver) you also get an faster fairway and a distance driver that you can grow into as your throwing form improves. This means you will be set with these discs for much longer as your skill level grows. It also includes a mini-marker which you would need if you play disc golf tournaments. Durable discs. The Truth and Trespass are also great forehand discs (which means they are torque resistant and hold up to the extra torque forehand throws put on discs). If you are forehand dominant player (like I was for the first two years I played) then I would recommend this set.
Cons: Price ($45.99 plus shipping).
7. Yikun 5-Disc Set – $32.99 + shipping – This might seem like a dark horse pick to experienced disc golfers because Yikun is not a very well know disc golf manufacturer, yet. However, the putter in this 5-disc set is my throwing putter and putting putter and my all-time favorite putter. Their Tiger plastic Yikun Gui is money!! To be completely honest I don’t know the other Yikun molds, but after checking the reviews of the molds on Infinite Discs’ website people seem to like them. I can stand behind this starter pack as both a great deal (currently only $33 for 5 discs) and will provide great fun. The only reason this pick is not higher on the list is because I have not personally thrown all the discs whereas I have in the other picks. Check Yikun out, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Pros: Price, quality plastic that starts off grippy and ages into hard and slick (very nice feeling), and all beginner-friendly discs that will fly nice for you.
Cons: The plastic feels great and is very durable for the putter and mid-ranges; however, I have not personally tested the drivers in this set yet and they may not be as durable. If you would like for me to do a review on this set, please let me know.
8. Innova 5-Disc Starter Set (DX Plastic) – $45.99 + shipping (free shipping for Amazon prime members) – This is very similar to #3 pick on this list except you get 2 more discs for a little more money. No doubt this is a fun option and a great starter set, but again I prefer Dynamic Discs’ base plastic over Innova’s because it is much more durable. DX plastic does feel softer and better in your hand. Also, this softer DX plastic will allow you beat in your discs faster allowing you to see how the flight of a disc changes with wear, but if you know you’re in the sport for the long haul I’d recommend the more durable Prime plastic from Dynamic Discs for the same price as this one (#6 pick on this list).
Pros: Innova is a fan-favorite brand so you get to know and learn discs that other disc golfers on the course likely know and like. Variety of molds give you a pretty complete bag to start with room to grown into the tee bird and destroyer as your skill improves. Includes a mini-marker which is required for tournament play. The Roc mid-range is one of the most popular mid-ranges of all time and the bead on it helps it not wear too quickly giving it longer life.
Cons: Plastic is not very durable. The aviar putter isn’t as good of a throwing putter as the other putters the other sets on this list.
9. Axiom 3-Disc Starter Set – $36.95 + shipping – Axiom is a sister company to MVP and one of my favorite manufacturers! The Axiom Proxy was my favorite putter for throwing and putting before I switched to the Gui. All of Axiom’s discs are great and their electron soft plastic is very grippy and durable because the outside overmold is a heavier and more premium plastic. This is a great starter set, but it isn’t higher on the list for two reasons: 1. It is a few dollars more than the other 3-disc sets and 2. It does not specify the exact molds you will get. Again, Axiom is a great manufacturer so I am sure they will only put beginner molds in this set so I highly recommend that you grab this set and hit the course! Warning: once you throw gyro, you might become a “gyronaut”!
Pros: Durable plastic outside and grippier soft flight plate giving you the best of both worlds: great soft feel yet very durable at the same time. Great molds that fly amazing for beginners. Gyro technology helps stabilize the spin of the disc and makes the discs fly better if not thrown with off-axis torque or enough spin (in other words, the overmold technology makes the discs a little easier to throw well).
Cons: Price (a little more expensive than the other 3-disc sets on this list coming in at $36.95 + shipping). Colors and specific disc molds are unknown ,but the Disc Store is a great retailer so tell them what color you want or I recommend you ask for one that has a proxy and a paradox or a proxy and an uplink.
10. Innova 3-Disc Glow DX Plastic Beginner Set – price ranges from $35.99 to $37.99 + shipping (excluding Amazon prime members) – This too is a very similar to pick #3, but they glow! If you want to play at night then I’d recommend the MVP R2 starter pack or this option. If you don’t ever see yourself playing at night but like Innova then pick #3 on this list is pretty much the same but saves you $6-$8 (depending on the current price on Amazon). If you are planning on playing a lot of rounds at night, my favorite types of glow plastic (the brightest and best feeling) are currently made from MVP/Axiom and Kastaplast. Innova’s glow plastic hasn’t traditionally been the brightest, but Foundation Disc golf recently said Innova is making strides with their glow plastic becoming much brighter so this might be just the ticket to fun rounds at night.
Pros: This set glows so you can play night rounds. Innova is a fan-favorite so you can fit in with other old-school disc golf fans by throwing Innova. DX glow plastic is a little grippier than regular DX plastic which could be beneficial for beginners begin able to get more spin on throws and putts.
Cons: DX Glow plastic is even a little softer than regular DX plastic so it is maybe the least durable plastic for a starter set on this list. It likely won’t last as long as the other sets (excluding pick #5 – Dismania’s active line which has similar softness and lack of durability). It costs a little more than the regular Innova starter set and doesn’t glow super bright.
Conclusion about disc golf starter sets:
If you get a beginner starter set from any top disc golf manufacturer you will be happy because their discs will be both good and beginner friendly. Innova, Discraft, MVP, Axiom, Kastaplast, Discmania, Trilogy (Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside Discs), Lonestar Discs, Clash Discs, Gateway, and Prodigy are some examples of top disc golf manufacturers that all have great starter sets.
Where you might get into trouble is with a company that manufactures other products and decides to make a disc golf starter set (an example would include Franklin who makes all types of sports equipment). No doubt, Franklin is a good company with quality products, but disc golf discs just aren’t their specialty and to be “frank” are not very good.
Finally, stay away from manufacturers who are likely taking their first step into making disc golf discs. You might get lucky and find decent discs, but odds are you won’t. Grab one from this list or from a top disc golf brand, and I know you’ll be happy!
TOP 3 GLOW DISC GOLF SETS
1. MVP R2 Recycled Disc Starter Set – $29.99 + shipping – only the rim glows on these discs, but they do glow bright and long. In fact, this is the best and brightest glowing plastic on this Top 3 list and MVP/Axiom make the brightest glow plastic on the market. In addition to great glow, these are by far my favorite discs in terms of quality and durability on this list. Get this set if you’re looking for good discs at a good price! It easily is my #1 pick for a glow set.
Pros: Bright glow, most durable, best molds, and great price. These discs are great for both beginners and more advanced players too!
Cons: Only the rim glows. The discs are mostly black which will make it harder to find the discs during the way if thrown off the fairway.
2. Innova 3-Disc Glow DX Plastic Beginner Set – price ranges from $35.99 to $37.99 + shipping (excluding Amazon prime members) – This is not the best or brightest glow set, but it is great for beginners. All the discs are in Innova’s soft base DX Glow plastic and beginner-friendly molds that are aimed for new players to be able to get good flights out of the discs. If you play night rounds with these you will likely need a UV charging flashlight to charge after ever hole because the glow plastic doesn’t last very long.
Pros: Innova is the most popular disc golf manufacturer because they are the oldest and simply have the most fans. Another benefit is that this is not a very expensive set so you can afford to try it and see if you like it. The plastic is very grippy which helps you put more spin on the discs. More spin=straighter and farther flights (but beware because more grip can also equal more grip locks).
Cons: The soft DX plastic is not very durable so it won’t last as long as MVP’s R2 plastic. Also the glow is not very bright or long-lasting.
3. Infinite 5-Disc Mystery Glow Set – $39.99 + shipping – this one is a gamble. It is a mystery as to what you get except for the fact that it is 5 “glow” discs. Unfortunately, a lot of glow discs don’t glow very bright or long so don’t expect all 5 to be great glow discs. Odds are though that you’ll get at least one or two good discs and that could make it worth it.
Pros: This is the only 5-disc glow set I could find online and it is a mystery box which are always fun because they are like a box of chocolates… you never know what you’re going to get!
Cons: You don’t know exactly what discs you will get and likely the majority won’t glow very well because most company’s glow plastic just isn’t that great.
Honorable mention: – Divergent Discs Beginner Glow Set – $24.99 + shipping – I have to mention this set here because it is not very expensive and the very understable nature of the discs make it a great set for brand new or beginner players to get. Divergent Discs isn’t a top manufacturer, but they do specialize in making only disc golf discs. The discs in this set seem to be decent discs based on the reviews I could find online. Unfortunately, it isn’t in the top 3 because I personally have never thrown Divergent. The reviews of this set on amazon make it seem like they don’t glow great but don’t glow terrible and that the discs fly pretty good. I guess I would recommend this set if you are brand new as you likely would get better flights out of these discs as opposed to my #1 pick the MVP R2 set. Finally, if you want to save money on shipping and you are an amazon prime member then you can also find this set on amazon for $24.99.
TOP 5 MISPRINT DISC SETS
Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64, and Westside Discs (Trilogy) Misprints – find 3-pack, 5-pack, 10-pack, or individual misprint discs from Trilogy here. They are marked down more than other top brands so start here if you’re looking for a great deal on misprint discs.
Discraft Misprints – with deals on individual misprints, up to 10-pack misprint deals, find your Discraft discs here! You can get the popular molds that retail around $20-$25 misprinted for $9.99 all day long.
Innova Factory Seconds (F2) – If you don’t mind minor blemishes on your Innova discs and the stock F2 stamp then head to Innova’s Factory Second retail store and grab the exact mold you are looking for! This is what I like to do when I’m looking for a good deal from Innova.
Dismania Misprints – If you’re a “Discmaniac” then check out their store’s Misprint Monday page. They don’t have a ton of misprint discs, but you can find some there.
Over 1,200 More Misprinted Discs – Infinite Discs is the largest online retailer of disc golf discs, and they have an awesome page of misprint discs. Currently, they have over 1,200 misprinted discs in stock from all types of manufactures and at a discounted price. Check out Infinite Discs Misprint Page and you can even sort with their filters to more easily find exactly what you are looking for.
TOP PUTTER PACK DEALS
If you like shallow beadless putters:
Yikun Gui 10-Pack Tiger Plastic – $59.99 + shipping – This is my all-time favorite putter for throwing and putting. It has a shallow feel and low profile similar to an Axiom Envy or Discraft Sensei and Yikun’s Tiger plastic is amazing. At first, Tiger plastic is very grippy (yet durable at the same time). The feel is most similar to the inner part of MVP’s electron soft plastic or even perhaps a denser jawbreaker plastic from Discraft. As it wears and ages however it becomes less grippy and more like KC Pro plastic from Innova. I can’t do it justice writing about it, but I can say with confidence I absolutely love it on this Gui putter. I have tried to bag over 20 different putters to find my favorite and this is the one I have settled on. Also, you can’t beat the price. Hurry and grab these if you’re a serious disc golfer or at least buy one and see if you like it as they are only $7.79 for one. I’ve tried all the plastic and Tiger is by far the best. The Dragon and Phoenix line are okay but slightly less premium than other manufacturers. The Phoenix line was more domey and understable however the Dragon Line might be one you would want to try as a more durable throwing putter but I personally use Tiger plastic for both putting and throwing as it is very durable and wears to be nice and slick over time. Finally, I love the unique texture on the bottom of the disc. Half of it is textured to give you more grip and the other half is slick. I use the slick part for putting and the textured part for more grip on outside the circle putts (I spin putt outside the circle and the texture helps me get more grip).
If you like beaded putters:
Penrose Ev-7 10-Pack – $89.99 + shipping – I personally am not a big fan of beaded putters, but the EV-7, the Judge, and the Reko are the three I like most. This is a quality putter in a quality plastic and many of my friends really like this disc so I thought I’d recommend it here.
Dynamic Discs Judge 5-Pack Prime Burst Plastic – $44.99 + shipping (free for amazon prime members) – This is my favorite beaded putter. It feels great in my medium-sized hands for both putting and throwing and flies very good. It is mostly straight-flying with good glide and a slight dependable fade at the end. This is a really good putter and one I highly recommend.
If you like beadless putters that aren’t too shallow or too deep:
Infinite Discs Alpaca 10-Pack – $69.99 + shipping – If you have larger hands or just like the deeper feel of a putter without the bead then the Alpaca might be the putter for you. I really like this putter as it flies great and putts well. If you aren’t familiar with Infinite Discs molds they are most similar to Innova’s plastic (probably are the same blends as they are manufactured by Innova for Infinite Discs) they just have different names. Alpacas are quality putters in quality plastic at a great price!
My favorite putter in this category is the Latitude 64 Pure, but the Alpaca is very similar.
If you like deep putters:
The Discraft Luna is my favorite but I couldn’t find a bulk discount on these. However, Latitude 64 has 20% discount on all of their putters. I recommend the Dagger which is deep like the Luna. Deep putters are nice because they trap more air underneath allowing the disc to glide and float much more than shallow putters. The benefit is that you need less effort or power to putt, but the downside is that if you miss they can tend to glide farther past the basket. You have to find the right balance of glide/lack of glide for your taste.
TOP 5 MYSTERY BOXES
1. Discmania Black Edition Mystery Box – $99.99 + shipping – Discmania usually has the coolest mystery boxes. It is something their fans (“discmaniacs”) love them for, and this Black Edition is the coolest. It has a Stone theme so the discs are specially stamped to be different types of discs like the Cloud Stone, Levitation Stone, Sky Stone, Rage Stone and Crown Stone to name a few. They claim the discs are worth over $150 in value, and I think you won’t be disappointed in this mystery box so find out what’s inside for yourself!
2. Pick your favorite brand and size Mystery Boxes from DiscGolfDisco – $29.95-$154.95 + shipping – no matter the brand you are looking for DiscGolfDisco likely has a mystery box for you. Personally, I got their 10-disc Kastaplast mystery box as my christmas present this year, and I was not disappointed. All 10 discs were amazing quality and I fell in love with the GrymX for my longest flying forehand disc (FYI – which is around 300 ft). I even commented that I lost my only Kaxe on the course and I also liked the KaxeZ and they made sure to include some of both. Great company and great option for mystery boxes.
3. Foundation Disc Golf Monthly 3-Disc Subscription Mystery Boxes – $45.00 + shipping – if you aren’t familiar with Foundation Disc golf but are getting into disc golf and watch YouTube then it likely won’t be long before you find out who they are. Foundation Disc golf is an online retailer with brick in mortar stores in Virginia and I think North Carolina. They are more well-known for their YouTube content and Grip Locked podcast because they are a group of likeable guys with fun disc golf content, education, and news. I’m a big fan, and I think this is the best product they offer. They tend to make the subscription boxes special for their subscribers by adding in additional swag or just other fun disc golf items like their Ript Revenge cards to aid disc golf rounds. All this to say that I recommend their monthly mystery boxes and think you’ll be happy to get them. Subscribe to save 5%.
4. Prodigy Misprints and Second 10-disc Mystery Box – $79.99 + shipping – I include this on the list because of the price. It’s hard to find 10 premium discs for this price. This box has misprints and factory seconds but all 10 are premium so I don’t think you can go wrong and it’s a great way to see if you like Prodigy or find new molds from them. They also have smaller Mystery boxes you can get through their website.
5. Gateway 10-disc Mystery Box (plus bonus prototype and mini) – $84.99 + shipping – here is another great deal for you on not 10, but 11+ disc for only $84.99! Gateway has the largest variety of plastic and you might be pleasantly surprised to find a new favorite feeling disc in this box. Check out Gateway if you never have because they are a really cool manufacturer and one that I believe isn’t as popular because they have too many plastics to choose from which can be confusing to buyers. This is a great way to try a lot without having to decide from their insane amount of plastic options.
DISC SET FAQs:
How to choose a disc golf set for beginners?
Just get a beginner disc golf set from a top disc golf manufacturer because they all have good beginner sets designed specifically for new players (and most include a putter, a midrange, and a driver). As long as you stay away from companies that manufacture other items but don’t specialize in disc golf sets you can’t go wrong.
How many disc golf discs should I have?
- If it is your very first time playing you only need 1 disc: a putter – but a starter set with 3 discs can be more fun and help you hit a variety of distances as well as give you back ups in case you lose a disc on the course
- If you are a beginner it is fun to start with a starter set or 3 discs: a putter, a mid-range, and a fairway driver
- If you know you’re hooked on the sport, there are 5-disc starter sets or get one of each of the 5 discs: a putter, an overstable approach disc, a mid-range, a fairway (understable or neutral/straight), and an understable distance driver
- If you are an intermediate disc golfer consider getting these types of discs for a full disc golf bag: a putting putter (or two), a throwing putter that is overstable (premium plastic lasts longer), a throwing putter that flies straight, an understable throwing putter, an overstable approach disc, an overstable mid-range, a straight mid-range, an understable midrange, a very overstable fairway driver (for fighting the wind and shots that need to curve really far and even skip around an obstacle), an overstable fairway driver, a straight fairway driver, an understable fairway driver, an overstable distance driver, a straight distance driver, an understable distance driver, and finally a roller disc (usually a very understable fairway or distance driver). That is 17 discs. I would also recommend a Berg for an extra overstable approach disc to complement your other one because the berg doesn’t fly as far (usually helping you stay closer to the basket on your approaches) and possibly consider a putter specifically for outside the circle puts that glides very far so you don’t have to put as much power on it to give the basket runs. If you can throw very far then you may want a very overstable distance driver to fight the wind and for big spike hyzer shots. Finally, some like a very overstable fairway driver as a utility disc for special shots like grenades. Personally, I just use my putting putters or berg for running the basket but many people like a disc like the Glitch, Polecat, or Spore for giving the basket runs. Also, I don’t throw far enough (or play in a lot of wind) to have a need for the very overstable distance driver slot or crazy stupid overstable utility spot.
What weight should disc golf discs be for beginners?
Beginners might do well to start with lighter discs from the 140-169 gram range, but it is okay to use max weight discs above 169 grams also. The benefit to lighter discs is that they likely will be more understandable and spin better which can give you better and farther flights as a beginner. If you are in a windy climate I would recommend max weight discs as they will be less affected by the wind.
What is the best disc golf driver for distance?
This depends on many factors including: how fast you throw a disc, how much spin you impart on a disc, the wind, the elevation change, your altitude above sea level (which affects how dense the air is), and a multitude of other variables so it is hard to answer. For now I’ll provide a few discs that I think you might gain extra distance with based on how far your throw currently:
0-150 feet (0-50 meters) – An understable mid-range or a very understandable fairway driver will give you max distance. Try an Axiom Uplink or a Westside Underworld respectively.
150-200 feet (50-61 meters) – A neutral or understable fairway driver will probably give you the most distance. I recommend a Latitude 64 River or Discraft Heat respectively. The Underworld might also be the ticket here or the Latitude 64 Diamond which are both very understable fairway drivers.
200-250 feet (61-76 meters) – The Diamond, the Discraft Heat, or Kastaplast Falk are my top recommendations if your max distance is this range. You might be able to get into 10 or 11 speed distance drivers here however if they are understable. I recommend the Latitude 64 Royal Grace or the Clash Discs Wild Honey. If you’re an Innova fan you may be getting into the Wraith territory here… especially if you have the patience to beat in a Wraith. Finally, you could try a very understable distance driver like the Innova Mamba or Road Runner.
250-300 feet (76-91 meters) – I was stuck here for a long time and my farthest flyer was the Innova Shryke. It is understable enough to get both turn and fade however the flight path is very wide. I got almost the same distance with slower-speed drivers like the Falk, Heat, and even the River, but the very wide rim on the Shryke does help you gain a little at this distance.
300-350 feet (76-107 meters) – my favorite picks for this range are the Discraft Thrasher, the Zeus, Loft Bohrium, and a beat in Innova Wraith. Start with the Thrasher, an under-rated but great disc I would consider “the people’s Destroyer”. For forehands at this range, I recommend the Discraft Zeus or Kastaplast Grym.
350-400+ feet (107-122+ meters) – at this distance you are able to get great flights out of a lot of distance drivers so really you will have to experiment and find what you like best. Many people and even pros like discs like the Innova Destroyer, Discmania Cloud Breaker, but I like Eric Oakley’s recommendation of the Infinite Discs Emperor (especially the Garret Gurthie signature series). In an interview Eric says it’s the farthest flying disc he’s ever thrown.

What is disc golf etiquette?
Unlike regular golf (traditional ball golf) disc golf is much more laid-back. There isn’t a dress code to disc golf, and really the only rule is to have fun. That being said, there are a few main things you want to do or be aware of to show proper disc golf etiquette:
- Be quiet when someone is throwing (especially putting).
- Stand behind the next person throwing so you aren’t in their way.
- Whoever is farthest from the basket throws.
- The person that got the best score on the previous hole goes next or “has the box” (meaning has the teebox).
- Don’t walk or move in the background of a person putting.
- When you make your putt, remove it from the basket for the next person putting so it doesn’t interfere with them being able to make their putt.
- You don’t have to, but it is good etiquette if a group behind you is playing faster than you/your group to let them “play through” (which just means to let them go ahead of you).
- Basically just be a good sport and considerate of others… don’t litter, don’t swear in front of children, don’t do drugs on the course, etc.
