WHAT ARE THE DISCBEE’S FAVORITE DISC GOLF BRANDS?
Disclaimer: these are just my favorite disc golf brands (not necessarily the best). Personally, I like these manufacturers in order of favoritism (as of 2024):
- Kastaplast – Kastaplast is my current favorite manufacturer primarily because I believe their plastic is the best. It is plenty durable yet the perfect amount of grippy at the same time. All of their plastic is amazing: K1 (best on the market), K3 a little slicker but still great, soft variations (if you like extra grip and give), and even their glow plastic is top 3 in the market in terms of both feel and brightness. In addition to having great plastic, they also have great molds. I personally bag the Berg, Svea, Kaxe, KaxeZ, Falk, and GrymX. If you’re throwing around 250-300ft (76-100m) then try the Falk and find out it is the farthest flying disc you have ever thrown! Kastaplast is a great company, and they have recently announced a partnership with Latitude 64. Only time will tell if this helps them (because they will either be able to expand their great plastic to new molds) or if it hurts them (because their plastic quality diminishes). So far it has remained the same.
- Discraft – If it’s good enough for Paul McBeth then it’s good enough for me. I love their molds, and they have some of the top plastic. The Buzzz is the most popular disc golf disc in the world and for good reason… it feels and flies amazing. Oh yeah, and let me just say one more thing about great molds: the Discraft Zone. This disc is my personal favorite approach disc (try it in jawbreaker plastic if you are a beginner) and it is a disc that almost every other manufacturer has tried to imitate because it is so good. These two discs alone are so good that they make Discraft one of my favorite manufacturers. I also really like Discraft’s consistency. Unlike some other manufacturers, you always get what you expect with high quality control in the manufacturing of their discs. Their marketing emphasizes the word ‘craft’ in Discraft, and they do treat making discs as a craft. I think that they are many people’s favorites just because of Paul McBeth, but regardless, they make great discs in many great plastics and have a ton of great molds. Currently, I bag the Zone, the Buzzz SS, the Buzzz, the Buzzz OS, the Trasher, and the Zeus.
- MVP/Axiom/Streamline – I believe in science; so, I believe their gyroscopic discs (namely their fission discs) give them an advantage (albeit small advantage) over other discs. This leads to you getting more consistency and distance out of your throws because most of the weight is in the outside rim which helps the discs have more of a gyroscopic effect when thrown and spin better and longer. They also have great (maybe the best) quality control when it comes to manufacturing their discs. They always produce consistent quality plastic and molds. Check out their Fission Wave to see what their gyroscopic plastic can do. This is their highest-recommended mold by die-hard fans, and the fission plastic flight plate is the lightest therefore creating the most noticeable gyroscopic effect. If you like Podcasts and want to learn more about this great disc golf brand then I recommend you check out this great interview of their Marketing Director on Trevor Staub’s new podcast. Currently, I bag the Proxy, the Crave, and the Wave, but they have a ton of great molds you might love. Unfortunately, their production (until recently with Simon Lizotte’s new Distance Driver the Time-Lapse) has not had the easiest time adding “dome” to their discs. In my opinion, the best distance and fairway drivers are more on the “domey” side creating a larger lift force and therefore more distance. Unless you have a cannon of an arm and can throw over 450ft (137m), I recommend you look for dome on the discs you are trying to get more distance out of. If you throw super hard you can just put enough force to get your disc super far, but most mere mortals like me need to utilize the lift the discs create to help you maximize your distance. Fortunately, in recent years MVP/Axiom/Streamline are producing discs with more dome and the future is very bright for both this company and the distance drivers they can create. Check out their Fission plastic and you might become a “GYROnaut” yourself!
- Trilogy (Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64, and Westside Discs) – In my book, I see these three companies as on big manufacturer because they use the same plastic even though they have different names. Dynamic Discs was my favorite when I got started (I think they make the best discs for beginners, have the best baseline plastic, and have some of the best Youtube content aimed at beginners). They have a vast variety of molds and lots of great plastic options with a very high standard of quality control. The reason they are above Innova in my opinion is that they make the best putters because their base plastic is grippy, tough, and cheap, and secondly because their quality control and consistency beats Innova’s. I highly recommend their putters above all other molds they make. Trilogy is top 3 in popularity among all disc golfers and for good reason… they are a really good disc golf manufacturer. Currently, I bag the Fuse, the Underworld, the River, and the Felon.
- Innova – “the choice of champions” – Innova has been the leading manufacturer in popularity for a very, very long time and still are the most popular disc golf manufacturer among disc golfers. I think this is mainly due to the fact that they made innovations to disc golf discs early in their existence and have been a fan favorite ever since, plus, they sponsored the best disc golfers for many years. Now, Discraft, Trilogy, MVP and other brands are stepping up their sponsorships, but Innova continues to have the most market share due to nostalgia and die-hard Innova fans. Oh yeah, and they have the most molds to choose from from! Some of their molds are unmatched and truly amazing. Their Star plastic is my one of my favorite plastics of all time, and their Champion plastic is right there with Star (both really great plastics). Plus, they have the Destroyer, Wraith, Shryke, Firebird, Teebird, Pig, Sidewinder, and other great molds I like a lot. The only reason they are not #1 or #2 in my opinion is because their quality control is not great. What I mean is that some discs you buy in a particular mold and plastic can vary drastically in the way they fly. This is good and bad. It is good because you can find discs with really unique flight patterns, but it is mostly bad because it is hard to replicate or replace discs that become staples in your bag. I think this inconsistency is partly due to the fact that they make and sell the most discs so there is just more of a variety due to the sheer volume of discs they are making. If they had better quality control they could be the best disc golf manufacturer in my opinion. Nonetheless, many people will only carry Innova because they are such fanatics, and I don’t think the downturn in top sponsorships nor the variety in their production will hurt their market share too much because they do have a lot of really amazing discs. Currently, I bag the Sidewinder, the Mamba, and the Daedalus.
- Discmania – I was not a big fan of Discmania until recently for two main reasons. First, their CEO got arrested for prostitution in 2022, and secondly they used other companies to manufacture their discs. Since then however, their CEO has been on a leave of absence from the company and they now do manufacture their own discs giving them control over the quality of what they produce. They come in at the #6 spot here because the plastic and molds they are producing as of recently are very good. Their plastic is very similar to Innova’s star plastic (maybe even a touch grippier and better) and I really like their new FD and DD molds (both of which I currently bag). Check out their DD if you are like me and max out around the 300-350ft (100-107m) range, and it might be your farthest flier.
- Yikun – This is a dark-horse pick here for the #7 spot. This is a manufacturer out of China that has both great plastic and not so great plastic. I personally use their Yikun Gui putter in Tiger plastic and it is my all-time favorite putter. Outside of this disc and this plastic, I don’t have a ton of experience, but this putter alone makes Yikun a top pick. Their Tiger plastic is very grippy at first (with a similar feel to MVP’s electron soft plastic or Discraft’s Crazy Tough plastic, but it wears in to be slick and durable with just the perfect amount of slickness for throwing and putting). Their other plastics are not really any good, but their Tiger plastic is the ticket. You may like some of the other plastics but they were too slick for my liking with the exception of the super soft which is too grippy and light for my liking although nice feeling. The Gui mold is very similar to feel and flight as a people’s favorite the Envy, and I stand behind it completely. Please go and get a Yikun Gui in Tiger plastic because I selfishly want this company to gain popularity and make more of this mold for many years to come so I can always find more in the future. After all the Gui in Tiger plastic is both my putting putter and throwing putter.
- Clash Discs – I just got a Wild Honey in the mail from Clash and the feel of the plastic alone helps them win the #8 spot in my heart. The plastic feels amazing and probably the most similar plastic to Kastaplast’s K1 (my all-time favorite plastic). Great quality coming from this new manufacturer so I’m excited how high they can rise in popularity.
- Lonestar Discs – Lonestar is a relatively new manufacturer out of Texas that makes their discs in-house (meaning they don’t outsource to other manufacturers). This company has two great premium plastics (Alpha and Bravo) both of which are durable and grippy, some base plastic called Victor 1 (softest) and Victor 2, glow plastic, and more high-quality plastics are sure to come. Personally, I think you can’t go wrong with either Alpha or Bravo for throwing molds or Victor plastic for putters. They have cool stamps and are the best new disc golf manufacturer in my eyes. Check them out for some solid discs like the Penny, Armadillo, Harpoon, Texas Ranger, Mad Cat, and my favorite the Tumbleweed. This is a really good company with a high probability of moving up the ranks. Keep up the great manufacturing Lonestar! Oh, but be aware their flight numbers are not indicative of how their discs fly. If you are interested in their molds I recommend checking out reviews of how they fly instead of just relying on their flight numbers to tell you have you might expect them to fly.
- Thought Space Athletics – they are a very good company with good vibes, they have the sickest artwork, and the Pathfinder is an amazing disc. If you love cool designs and art then this might be the disc golf brand for you! If you are in need of an amazing designer check out this page about hiring TSA’s design team. Their Pathfinder is probably their most popular disc so start there to check out this company.
- DGA – This brand’s popularity is about to grow because they just signed Catrina Allen for the 2022 season and who has been winning a lot of tournaments since she signed with the company. Oh yeah, and she’s only using DGA whereas some people who throw DGA use their “sister company’s” (Discraft) discs. DGA discs are produced by Discraft so if you love Discraft then you might find some unique slots of discs from DGA. Check em’ out, and good luck to Catrina Allen!
- Mint Discs – Also relatively new to the disc golf scene, this company seems to produce quality plastic and discs. Their names are very cool, and I really like their Popcorn putter. I am excited to see what else is in store for this great new disc golf brand. Mint has quality plastic and molds so I do recommend their discs.
- Infinite Discs – This is one of the best online retailers that has the largest selection of discs on the web, and they also partner with companies like Innova to create their own molds. Professional Eric Oakley recommends the Alpaca which is similar to the famous P2 putter from Discmania. He also highly recommends the Garett Gurthie Emperor as the farthest flying disc made if you can bomb. I had to buy it myself, and the plastic feels amazing and exactly like Innova’s Star plastic. If I had to guess, their plastic types line up with Innova’s plastic types as follows:
S-Blend = Star C-Blend = Champion
G-Blend = G-star (Kind of like Star but extra grippy and flexible)
I-Blend = Pro
D-Blend = DX
X-Blend = maybe XT plastic
P-Blend = KC Pro (Hard and slick plastic good for putters)
- Gateway – tons of plastics to choose from. In fact I think they have the largest variety of plastics to choose from. For some, this variety makes them a favorite, but for most it just makes it too hard to decide which plastic to try. This company has been a staple for many players bags for a very long time and for good reason: they produce great plastic and molds. Start with their Gateway Wizard for a great putter and to get exposed to this quality company and check out this great video from Robbie C to learn more about the variety and types of plastics they make.
- Legacy – Full transparency, unfortunately I have not tried these discs yet, but my favoritism here is based on what I’ve heard about them from other disc golfers. Their Recluse and Patriot are often talked about as great molds. If you want to check them out for yourself please do.
- Millennium – Like Legacy, I have not tried these discs yet, but my ranking is based on what I’ve heard about them from other disc golfers. You’ll have to check them out for yourself as I do not know a ton about this company.
- Prodigy – personally I just don’t like feel and the sharp edges they leave on a lot of discs, but I hear they are doing a better job of not leaving this sharp “flashing” on the discs as of recently. This is a very popular company, but the smaller feeling size of the discs coupled with their sharp edges (from the selection I have felt) just is not for me personally. Try them out for yourself because they are a top manufacturer especially if you have smaller hands. Unfortunately, I just never got into trying a lot of Prodigy discs, so I can’t recommend them as much as other disc golf brands.
HONORABLE MENTION DISC GOLF BRANDS
Another new and popular manufacturer that is growing rapidly and worth checking out due to the fact they make amazing putters is a company called EV-7. Co-founder of Prodigy, Phil Arthur, left to form his own company, EV-7, which specializes in and only makes putters. The goal is for them to make the best putters in the world, and some people believe they are succeeding in doing so.
A newer company that had a very successful kickstarter campaign is called Loft. They have designed a new driver (called Bohrium) with computers that has a rounded interior rim making it more aerodynamic and supposedly the world’s farthest-flying driver. Below is an image courtesy of Six-Sided Discs Youtube Channel showcasing how the rounded rim on the bottom of the Bohrium disc creates less drag and therefore helps it fly faster and farther. Click here to watch the full YouTube video if you want to learn more about Loft and this Bohrium disc.
