WHAT ARE THE BEST DISC GOLF DISCS FOR BEGINNERS TO BUY?

The best discs for beginner disc golfers are putters and understable discs.

If you are new to the sport it can be very tricky to know which disc golf discs you need to get started, and beware that the vast majority of disc golf discs are made for more advanced players who can already throw far. If you throw these “stable” discs that are intended for advanced players they will almost immediately fade out and crash to the ground. Here’s what I recommend as the best disc golf discs for beginners:

OPTION 1 Start with a starter pack. These typically provide 3 discs (a putter, a midrange, and a driver) which helps you cover most shot types and distances you need. More importantly, they are typically understable or neutral discs that are much easier for beginners to throw. Finally, starter packs usually come in a company’s base plastic which allows you to “beat in” the discs more quickly and learn about how the flight characteristics of your discs change with wear. For almost all discs discs become more understable as they wear.

I’ve tried a lot of the starter packs and my recommendation is to get Dynamic Discs 3-disc starter set because I feel as if they have the best plastic and molds of any starter pack. The plastic is grippy and durable and will allow you to use the discs for much longer than other company’s base plastics which wear too quickly. Also, the grippy feel of the plastic allows you to more easily get more spin on your discs in turn making for better and straighter flight paths. In my opinion, a close second is Latitude 64’s starter set which is very similar but I like DD’s molds better. The truth in DD’s starter set is one of my favorite discs of all time (favorite midrange for forehand because of the flat top) and the Judge is one of the highest-rated putters on the market.

PRO TIP: Sometimes they have a misprint pack for only $19.99 on Dynamic Discs’s site. It essentially is this starter pack but with misprinted stamps.

OPTION 2 Start with a putter only. When you are brand new to disc golf you most likely won’t be throwing very far because it takes a long time to develop the proper throwing form to get a lot of power and spin behind the disc. This means that you can play entire rounds of disc golf with a putter alone. It isn’t like ball golf where you only use the putter on the green. You can throw putters off the tee, and in fact you might get more distance with a putter than any other type of disc because they glide more at slower speeds.

If you go this route, I recommend a putter that is also good for throwing base plastics are fine because they typically grip the chains and go in the basket easier than more premium plastics. Some of my favorites include:

Axiom Envy – the one James Conrad made famous by throwing in from distance at the 2021 World Championship.

Discraft Luna – my personal favorite throwing putter.

Yikun Gui – my go to putting and throwing putter which most people don’t even know about. This is the most underrated disc golf disc in disc golf in my opinion because know one knows about them yet. Hopefully I can help change that. Yikun’s base Tiger plastic is the best base plastic in my opinion and you can pick up these discs for $7 or $8 and they will last a long time. Oh, if you’re a discmania fan then this is the same mold (shape) as Discmania’s Sensei. I think Yikun actually manufacturers these discs for Discmania. So, my point is the Sensei is a good putter but I like Yikun’s plastic better personally.

Discraft Roach – similar feel to the Luna but a little less stable. I recommend the Roach because Lunas can be hard to find because they are constantly being bought by everyone.

Dynamic Discs Judge – if you like a nice beaded putter.
Dynamic Discs Warden
– if you like beadless.

Innova Aviar – I don’t like Innova’s base plastic so I’d actually buy a little better plastic like their R Pro plastic or better. You can also find a lot of variations on this mold ie the AviarX3 which is highly rated.

Latitude 64 Pure – very nice straight putter that’s beadless but a bit deeper dish than an Envy or Gui. Very good for Understable Throwing putter. This would be a great compliment to on of the first 3 putters on this list.

Final note – putters are all pretty similar so what is most important is how they feel to you and your hand. That’s why if you can go to a disc golf store in person to feel the discs that’s the best option. Feel for not only the shape but also the plastic. The softer and grippier the more it will grip the chains but the faster it will wear.

OPTION 3 Buy a putter and a Discraft Meteor. The Buzzz is THE MOST POPULAR DISC in disc golf and for good reason. It flies straight. It flies great. It flies true every time… once you beat it in. Instead the Meteor sometimes called “the people’s Buzzz” starts off as what the beat in Buzzz flies like. It flies dead straight out of the box. This disc will teach you how to throw properly because it will just fly wherever you throw it. Also, it feels so good in your hand. This is what I recommend for you to get started. Buy a Yikun Gui in Tiger plastic and a Discraft Meteor in any plastic and you are good to go for the first few months of your disc golf journey. You won’t need to upgrade to a driver until you are throwing past 200 feet, give or take.

OPTION 4 – To have a very diverse bag buy a putter and one of these 5 types of discs:

1- Straight Midrange: (Discraft Buzzz, Discraft Meteor, Kastaplst Svea, Innova Mako, Latitude 64 Fuse, Dynamic Discs Truth, etc.)

2- Overstable Putter: (Discraft Luna, Axiom Envy, Yikun Gui, Discmania P2, etc.)

3- A very Overstable Fairway Driver in a premium plastic for utility shots that really make the disc curve a lot to get around or over obstacles: (Dynamic Discs Felon, Innova Firebird, Discraft Raptor, etc.) This will give you the ability to hook or curve around objects.

4- An Understable Fairway or a very Understable Distance Driver (understable meaning the 3rd flight number is negative and will fly further for beginners). Don’t get one that’s too fast. Speed 7-10 but not more until you are breaking 250 feet of distance: (Discraft Heat, Innova Sidewinder, DGA Sail, Discraft Hades, Prodigy X3, Discraft Avenger SS, Discmania CD3, etc.) – those are all understable so your first overstable distance driver I recommend is Latitude 64 Grace because it’s only an 11 speed but flies like an overstable distance driver should.

5 – An overstable approach disc for getting your approach shots near the basket every time dependably: (Discraft Zone is the most popular and my recommendation, Innova Pig, Westside Harp, Kastaplast Jarn, Innova Toro, etc.)

Then… you can upgrade to distance drivers once you’ve outgrown these first 6 disc types. If you are wondering why you don’t need an understable putter it is because over time your overstable putter will become understable once it gets warped and dinged up.
